Introduction to the Drivers CPC

What is the Driver CPC?

The driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence – Level 2) is a qualification required by law for LGV and PSV drivers who drive professionally throughout the UK and Europe it is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of professional LGV and PSV drivers throughout their working life.

Driver CPC regulations will apply to new drivers acquiring a PCV licence from September 2008 and September 2009 for LGV drivers.

Questions

Q How will the Drivers CPC affect me?

A Your individual circumstances will determine how you will acquire your driver CPC. New drivers acquiring a vocational entitlement (C1, C1+E, C or C+E licence) after the 10th September 2009 will have to obtain an initial Driver CPC in addition to the conventional licence acquisition.

Existing drivers who already hold a vocational licence (C1, C1+E, C or C+E) on the 10th September 2009 are exempt from the initial driver CPC. This is known as 'acquired rights' or more commonly known as 'Grandfather Rights'.

Q What happens once I have my Driver CPC?

A Once you have qualified as a new driver or acquire you driver CPC through ‘Acquired Rights’ you then have to complete a total of 35 hours Periodic Training within the following 5 years in order to maintain your driver CPC and keep it valid. Drivers acquiring their CPC via acquired rights will have to complete their periodic training by September 2014. New drivers will be required to complete their 35 hours of periodic training in the following 5 years from the date you acquired your first driver CPC card.
