ADR Driver Training | Initial & Refresher

If you are involved in the carriage of dangerous goods by road, ADR regulations apply to you

More and more goods previously outside the regulations now fall within their scope. In the majority of cases, drivers of vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and over carrying dangerous goods require an ADR Certificate.

All drivers training courses must be approved by the DFT (Department for Transport) and authorised by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). Transed Training is approved to undertake training/examinations in all of the following Modules, with the exception of Class 1 and Class 7. Drivers must complete a course and pass the relevant examinations (which must be taken en bloc at the end of the course) an at least the following:

  • Core Module (which is the basic part of the course, applicable to both Tankers and Packages)
  • Packaged Goods or Tanker Module
  • At least one class specific module for the type of dangerous goods carried. The optional modules currently available are:
    • Class 1 - Explosives
    • Class 2 - Gases
    • Class 3 - Flammable Liquids
    • Class 4 - Flammable Solids
    • Class 5 - Oxidisers and organic peroxides
    • Class 6 - Toxic and Infectious substances
    • Class 7 - Radioactives
    • Class 8 - Corrosives
    • Class 9 - Miscellaneous

Generally speaking to obtain an ADR Certificate it is necessary to pass at least three of the above modules - e.g. Core, Tanks, Packages, and one Class of chemical. It is also important to remember that when carrying dangerous goods under the regulations, you must be in possession of an ADR certificate - and it will be approximately 4 weeks after you have completed your training course before your certificate is issued by the DVLA.

As you may be aware part of the ADR training may be counted towards the Driver CPC, 21 hours (3 days) of the initial training and 7 hours (1 day) of the Refresher training, should you wish the training to be counted towards the drivers CPC there will be an additional charge per 7 hour block to cover the fees involved in registering the individual with JAUPT.

ADR FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)

What time do we finish?

Why does everyone always ask this first? At around 3:45pm each day.

What if my writing/spelling are poor?

Don’t worry, all exam papers are “multiple choice”. There is no actual writing involved you just have to fill in a box to indicate the correct answer.

Does Transed mark the exam papers?

No, these are sent to SQA the day after your course has finished.

How long before I get my results?

About 4/6 weeks. If you have passed, your ADR certificate will be sent direct to your home address by the DVLA. shortly after, Transed will confirm your results either to you or to the company that has sent you on the course.

Can I carry dangerous goods as soon as I have been trained?

No, you must be in possession of your ADR certificate – and remember this should be carried with you at all times when transporting dangerous goods.

What if I fail?

You only have to retake the module(s) you have failed. We will contact you/your company with a list of alternative dates for you to retake the appropriate part of the course and the exam.

Do they tell you which questions you got wrong?

No.

Who should I contact in the event of any query concerning my results?

Transed, we will follow up your query with SQA.

What are the photos for?

Once we have received your exam results from SQA, Transed will provide you with a laminated photocard. As your ADR Certificate does not contain a photo and it is compulsory to carry a photographic means of identity when transporting dangerous goods under the regulations, this card can be useful for identification purposes.

How long will my ADR certificate last for?

Your certificate will be valid for 5 years. It must be renewed sometime between the 4th and 5th year – no earlier than 12 months before the expiry date but you must take a refresher course no later than 4 weeks before it is due to expire.
